Rodney Baxter was born in England in 1940, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and at The Australian National University. After two years at MIT, he returned to Australian National University in 1970, where he is now Professor and Head of the Department of Theoretical Physics in the Institute of Advanced Study. Winner of the Pawsey Medal, Boltzmann Medal, Lyle Medal, Dannie Heineman Prize, and the Harry Massie Medal, he is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Fellow of the Royal Society of London, and Fellow of the Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, where he was Royal Society Research Professor in 1992.
